Gumbo Limbo Getting Wild

The Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is looking to get wild in the backyard.

This summer at Gumbo Limbo will feature a new attraction - and Florida's Wild Backyard promises to be an innovative exhibit that will afford visitors of all ages the opportunity to explore the plants and animals found in South Florida's diverse ecosystem.

Visitors will get to know native snake species, gopher tortoises, box turtles and marine animals. There will even be a scavenger hunt allowing visitors to help identify invasive species and learn about responsible pet ownership.

The collection of interactive activities and displays will further advance Gumbo Limbo's mission by showcasing the adaptive habits of animals that live – often unseen by most – on Boca Raton's barrier island. It will help visitors identify ways they can aid conservation efforts within the local ecosystem.

The exhibit will be located near the shallow aquariums and will utilize existing infrastructure like sea water supply and tanks to provide a unique and accessible experience for those already familiar with Gumbo Limbo as well as first-time visitors.

Along with enjoying Florida's Wild Backyard, Gumbo Limbo visitors are also encouraged to climb the 40-foot tower to Jacob's outlook, enjoy a walk on the boardwalk or through the butterfly garden, and relax in an authentic Chiki overlooking the Intercoastal.

Gumbo Limbo is open for visitors to explore the Nature Center & Aquariums from Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Monday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Nature Trail, Boardwalk, and Jacob’s Outlook are accessible from Monday to Sunday, 7 a.m. until sunset.
