Smaller Community-based Pickleball Tournaments On The Way

Upcoming pickleball tournaments at Patch Reef Park will cater more to members and residents, limiting the amount of outside tournament organizers who bring large tournaments to the facility.

The new philosophy will be on display beginning with Spring Smash Pickleball Tournament scheduled for April 5.

There's no question that Patch Reef's new covered pickleball complex is in demand. The Pickleball Is Life Boca Open held in late February drew more than 600 participants from around the nation. A few weeks later the World Pickleball Open held its two-day tournament at Patch Reef.

While those larger tournaments can be fun and draw some of the nation's best players, they also limit the number of courts available for play by non-tournament players.

Rather than holding two large externally organized tournaments in back-to-back months, Patch Reef is looking to limit such tournaments to two-to-four such tournaments per year.

The facility will instead be the site for smaller monthly tournaments managed internally.

The Spring Smash promises a day of exciting matches across multiple divisions. Participants can compete in the Mixed Doubles (Aged 50+), Mixed Doubles 3.25 – 4.00 DUPR Rating, Mixed Doubles All Ages, Mixed Doubles 3.5 – 4.25, Men's Doubles All Ages or Men's Doubles 3.0 – 4.0 divisions.

All divisions will feature a round robin format, guaranteeing at least two matches for every team. Each match of the round robin will be played to 11 points, winning by 1. The top four teams will advance to the finals, which will employ regular scoring, winning by 2.

Participants must register by April 2nd at 7:00 p.m. and must have an active DUPR account to play. Results will be reported to DUPR.

Spots are limited.

Tournament play begins at 1 p.m. and is expected to run until 5 p.m.
