Scary Fun at District Parks

Boca Boo Days are well underway and once again District Parks are in the middle of all the spookiness.

Four of the most anticipated events will occur this weekend.

On Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. children are invited to visit Sugar Sand Park's community center for the Pumpkin Pals Halloween Party, where there will be games, dancing, crafts and more. Intended for children ages 5-10, the festivities will offer complimentary snacks and drinks, and will also feature a parade of children in costumes. Tickets are $12 for residents and $15 for non-residents.

That evening families are invited to head to the District-funded Gumbo Limbo Nature Center for the Haunted Heights nighttime tour of the hammock. Climb to the top of the observation tower, but be aware that anything could come from anywhere during this trek. Visitors can begin their exploration at one of four times – 7:30, 8, 8:30 or 9 p.m. Residents can enjoy spookiness for $12, non-residents for $15. Advanced registration is required.

Children are invited to don their costumes on Sunday for the annual Monster Mash party at the Boca Raton Swim Center. There will be face painting, games and the pumpkin dive, during which children collect pumpkins from the pool and redeem them for prizes. The free fun begins at noon.

Spookiness hits the courts at the Boca Raton Racquet Center on Oct. 30 for a juniors tennis tournament. Kids ages 7-12 are encouraged to wear their costumes for the round robin tournament. Registration is required. Entry fee is $30 for residents, $37 for non-residents.

District-owned and -funded parks have been in the Halloween mood for more than a week now. On Oct. 16 Caren Neile entertained a Willow Theatre audience with Dark Tales from the Sunshine State.

Sugar Sand Park continued to keep it creepy that weekend when its Spooky Sounds demonstration returned to Sugar Sand's Science Explorium.

Two other earlier events were aimed at the youngsters. Little Boos Bash at Sugar Sand Park's community center provided a playtime for young monsters. The afternoon included toys, story time and refreshments.

Gumbo Limbo got its creep on with the first of two Halloween events. Halloween by the Sea was designed for younger children, many of whom eagerly posed in costume with Gumbo Limbo mascot, Luna.
