Safety Upgrades Coming To Sugar Sand

One of Boca Raton's favorite parks is about to become even safer.

At recent meetings District Commissioners voted unanimously to add additional security cameras and a cellphone antenna booster system to Sugar Sand Park.

“We understand how important Sugar Sand is to families in our community,” District Chair Bob Rollins said. “I'm always interested in ensuring the best possible experience for our visitors.”

The new security cameras will be installed inside the science playground. They will tie into the park's existing video security system monitored by the Boca Raton Police Department.

Previously the only cameras covering the science playground were pointed at the entrance/exit. The new cameras will offer the BRPD a look at some of the hidden corners and hard-to-see areas of the playground.

“Only the Boca Raton police will have access to these camera feeds,” District Executive Director Briann Harms said. “This system allows us to meet the safety needs of our community while being as minimally invasive as possible.”

In response to concerns about inconsistent cellular service within Sugar Sand, the District will install Sinewave's rooftop antenna booster on top of the community center and the field house. The system is expected to ensure reception for emergency service calls within those buildings, if needed.

The system's antennas capture cellular signals from nearby carrier towers and distribute those signals using signal amplification equipment and strategically located interior antennas.

It is designed to improve voice and data communications for all major cellular carriers – including but not limited to Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile – while utilizing existing 4G LTE and 5G networks.
