Patch Reef Pickleball Receives Upgrade

Patch Reef's new covered pickleball complex is now even better.

In recent days construction crews completed installing mesh screens - similar to, but thicker than, the wind screens already attached to complex fencing – designed to limit glare that occurs during certain times of day.

“It's an improvement for sure,” said Michael Gonzales following a mid-week morning of open play.

Responding to concerns cited by frequent players, District Commissioners approved a plan to install the mesh screen along the south side of the complex, blocking the area between the roof eves and the perimeter fence where sunlight leaks into the covered pickleball courts.

Players reported glare coming primarily from the south side that affected their ability to track shots and ball spin.

“The Patch Reef Paddle and Racquet Club's covered pickleball complex is one of the finest in Florida, but if there are ways our community members believe we can make it even better we are certainly going to consider taking action,” Commissioner Erin Wright said.

Along with mitigating the glare, the new screens also appear to be adding another benefit.

“I think it also stops the wind,” Jeremy Boggio said. “I think it also stops the glare as well, especially when you are on [the north] side.”

The District opened Boca Raton's first covered pickleball complex in October.

Since then, the courts have been in high demand, and players praise the new facility.

“I love playing here because I don't like being out in the sun,” Shari Shanefield said.
