Commissioners' Corner: Best Part of the Job

District Commissioners are tasked with many duties that directly improve the Boca Raton community.

They decide where to build parks, what to put in those parks, and how to fund those parks.

Commissioners also ensure that the parks are maintained to the lofty standards Boca Raton residents rightly expect.

And then there's the human interaction. Commissioners are constantly talking with - and listening to - Boca Raton residents about ways to improve our community.

This prompted the question: "What is the best part about being a Boca Raton Beach & Park District Commissioner?"

BOB ROLLINS (Vice-Chair)
Playing a role in creating the most attractive athletic facilities in the county and the state. I'm just delighted that I've been able to play a part in getting the parks that we have in Boca Raton to be first class.

CRAIG EHRNST (Treasurer)
I think it's funding what people want, then letting the volunteers run it. We'll build it, but let them run it. That's what people want to do and we keep them invested. I'm all-in on that. I love seeing how our volunteers constantly produce great results.

SUZI VOGELGESANG
Carrying on (former Commissioner) Gordon Gilbert's vision of educating our community about the importance of the relationship between the land and the sea is definitely my favorite part of serving on the Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District board. Mr. Gilbert's enthusiasm for the preservation of green space for future generations inspired so many others over the years to save the land where Sugar Sand Park now provides countless visitors recreational enjoyment. The District's 'inventory' of other parks such as Ocean Strand, Patch Reef, the Swim and Racquet Center - as well as North Park - will keep our community recreating outdoors for years to come.

ERIN WRIGHT (Chair)
Having grown up in the city of Boca Raton, it's great to give back to the community. The beaches and parks, I had so much fun there as a child, and so much fun now with my kids.

STEVE ENGEL
Simply making a difference.
