Centennial Sundays Celebrate Boca's Century

The Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District celebrates the city of Boca Raton's centennial throughout June with Centennial Sundays.

Each Centennial Sunday will offer a different event with new rewards for travelers participating in the free Centennial Passport program.

“As Commissioners we are proud that the District is a sponsor of Boca Raton's centennial celebration,” District Chair Erin Wright said. “I love Centennial Sundays because they give the community even more reasons to visit and enjoy some of our great parks.”

Designed for family fun, Centennial Sunday events offer a wonderful opportunity for bonding. Every Sunday will feature a new craft for participants to complete. Those arriving with a completed Centennial Passport will also receive a free frozen treat. All events run from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., while supplies last.

The fun begins on Sunday, June 1, with a terrarium-building event at District-owned Sugar Sand Park. Participants are given glass containers, soil, rocks, moss, and plants. They are invited to create their own miniature habitat.

The following Sunday, June 8. action shifts to the District-owned Boca Raton Swim and Racquet Center for the creation of Mosaic Beach Art. Participants receive tiles and a base, and are encouraged to create a piece of artwork that reminds them of the beach.

Centennial Sundays continues on June 15 at the District-funded Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, where visitors can create reef-themed refrigerator magnets out of objects that include shells, sand, coral cutouts and mini starfish.

June's Centennial Sundays conclude on June 22 at District-owned Patch Reef Park with Suncatcher Sunday. Travelers can create the decorative ornaments usually made with stained glass or crystals that are hung near windows to reflect and refract sunlight. This event will be held at Pavilion Four.

For those who've yet to complete their Centennial Passports, there's still time.

The Centennial Passport is filled with little challenges to be completed at District park attractions. Upon completion of each challenge, visitors get their passports stamped. When all pages are stamped, the traveler wins a prize that includes a beach towel celebrating Boca Raton's 100th birthday.

“The passport provides even more incentive to visit some of our outstanding parks,” said District Commissioner Craig Ehrnst, who completed his passport in April. “I'd encourage anyone who wants to get to know our community better to complete the passport and then enjoy the rewards during these Centennial Sundays celebrations.”

Blank passports can be picked up at Sugar Sand and Patch Reef parks, the Boca Raton Swim and Racquet Center, and Gumbo Limbo.
